Elflord: Summer's Magic #1 Night Wynd, 1993, b&w.
1 Elflord: Summer's Magic #1 cover Kim fears all is lost, Turo asks Hawk if they are done for as ant men attack. Hawk says, "Turo, if you're not going to help, shut up!" Falcon and Dao return; Dao was organizing the troops; Falcon hopes Bran can do the rest of that. Hawk thought they'd left. Bran with others are herded below by the rock troll. Bran wants to find out why. Bran tells the whining other squire boys and pages, "Oh stop blubbering, you little pussies, and help me search the next chamber." Purebreeze calls Bran a stupid ass, she is trapped down below by the troll. Bran tells her not to go away as she calls him a dink, asking him to get a rope. Jethel and Windblade in tatters of their royal clothes, Jethel just about covered by his hanging cloth over his crotch which is held in place by his belly button jewel. His leg coverings are also ripped down. Windy tells Jethel they had to swim through the water (which was cold) because the slime they dropped in was a drug which destroyed the other boys' wills and made them worship the thing that secrets the stuff. Windy reaches out with magic and locks onto two of the nearest page boys in the street above. He tells Jethel their clothes are on the way. Windy tells Jethel to help him strip down the two. Jethel worried the pages will freeze now is told by Windy that he will put them to sleep here in the pipe and cover them with a hibernation spell which can keep them warm. They will come back and get them later (AHH, BUT DO THEY?). Cardinal talks to his boys about having already removed the effeminate little twit Windblade. He figures by now he is lapping up goo off that vile slug thing the Shade Master found. Leaf and a curly black haired page boy hold hands as the Cardinal gets so excited he could just pee. He can't wait to put his pimply butt on the throne. Nicho and Nung come in with Cloudshadow and Ravenclaw (who claims to be more of an Elfheimbane than Hawk). Windy tells Jethie that a nice hot bath sounds good but they have to stop the Cardinal and the Shade Master. Jethel tells him page boy tights aren't very thick. In the Dragonfly Leaf is sucking his thumb, dreaming of Windblade as lies down next to the curly haired page boy. The other page boy tells him the Cardinal tells them what to do, what to think. Leaf wants Windblade back even though Windy is outlawed and to speak of him is blasphemy. The Cardinal says magic is evil. Puddin wonders what will happen if the Cardinal wake up one morning and no like putties. Windy and Jethel show up, Windy freezes the page boy, calling him a big mouth and figures maybe the landlord can turn the page boy into a planter. Leaf apologizes to Windblade——they made him feel so unclean, told him many terrible things about Windy. Windy doesn't blame him, it is the cardinal's power—a different kind of magic. Jethel tells them they are together again and that is what is important.
Backup story: "The Hawkling" part 2.
Backup story first page by Barry Blair and Angel de Mioche: a month has passed since Hawk came to the Temple. Hawk trains in the martial arts as if born to the way. Spudling roots Hawk on during his training with another boy, "Turn him into road kill. Atta boy!" The monk slapshis ears, wanting less martial and more art. Young Hawk stops working with his staff, sweating. Blackraven almost had him. Hawk takes on twice the opponents than any other boy. Spudling mentions Hawk stinks right now but Hawk counters by telling that Spudling was ripping farts all night long. Hawk is in the skimpiest of loin cloths as is Spudling. They go swimming and tease each other. Spudling tells Hawk all around him fish are dying but Hawk tells him from his gas attacks and splashes him. Watching them in a crystal ball is the elf man who once had Hawk work for him. All he's ever had since the boy ran off with the scroll is bad luck. He will not kill Hawk any more, Hawk is his luck. He will just knock off his nuts. "That'll show him there's no hard feelings." He climbs a wall. He thinks guard dogs are coming. One does and scares the elf man off––one little white haired poodle. He jumps over the wall but is safe inside the temple now. Midnight: he sneaks into Hawk's room and puts a knife to his throat, saying, "Hello sleeping beauty." If Hawk will not come with him, he will kill Spudling, his room is third from the end. He tells Hawk to get the scroll and bring it to the Swine and Swill Inn tomorrow afternoon alone. He hits Hawk and then kicks him. Hawk tells him he hates him. Looking in on Spudling, Hawk says, "I won't let that monster touch you!" Hawk finds the scroll in a terribly claustrophobic room, quiet and easy to steal. He takes it. Spudling finds out and the Master, already watching Hawk, does not agree that Hawk has failed the test––but things will made tougher for him now. Hawk in his underwear runs through the night, "Everything's ruined! I'll kill him!
