Night Wynd, 1992, b&w.
s Samurai: Vampire's Hunt #1 cover Murray Hill Theatre, 34th street near Lexington: Hotachi, Simon, Neji, and Lee (in a short cut shirt and jacket, sweats), and Gen come out of the moviesóóBATMAN RETURNS is on the billboard along with SISTER ACT. Simon is hungry, Neji wants pizza, Gen asks what else is new, Lee wonders if Simon is talking about the dream that pizza makes Simon have: the one where genetically altered turtles drag him down a sewer, Neji finishes by adding that the turtles tie Simon to a post and practice kung fu on him. Simon didn't say no pizza then and tells Lee thatóóhe may like the dream. Gen is proud of her Japanese heritage but wants Italian. A small Bistro off Lafayette Street in Little Italy: Lee asks Simon if he wants anchovies: it may make him dream about Jacques Cousteau. Hotachi tells Gen that his scampi has too much garlic in it. Neji tells Lee that Hotachi (who is leaving) wants to be alone. They tease each other but Gen tells them to try to act half their age. Things are just too quiet for Hotachi lately. Lee tells them trouble finds him or he goes looking for it. He just wishes he was with him. Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street, near Times Square: men bother a blond (?) boy who has just arrived in the city with his bag (a farm boy one calls him). Someone asks the kid if he wants drugs, another asks if he wants to see his weenie, another asks someone to kill him over and over. Another says something odd like "A cop, a kiddie cop. Tell Mustaffa!" A man wearing a cross and woman look at the boy and claim that he is one. She doesn't want any hawks to get the boy first. Soho: Hotachi is walking, dreaming of how it could have been if he were born a few hundred years earlier, a true Samuraióóhe feels he is just a drifter, not really in Japan and just fitting in to fit his surroundings, the edges of his bushido are dulled. Someone cries out for help. Hotachi says, "At last." A homeless man looks out as Hotachi runs, "Someone's running toward the screaming! The city's full of crazies!" The girl, her brother with a somewhat dreadlocked hairdo, and two others have the boy. The man with the cross, Minus, threatens to rip out the boy's lungs. Hotachi floors Minus with a kick and punches out Jan in the face, "You next, dick face?" The girl's brother doesn't want to; the girl says, "Show some guts, little brother. Kill the little shit." Hotachi hits him, "Did he show enough guts or you want more?" The girl, Minus, and her bro run off. The boy thanks Hotachi. Hotachi leaves to find them. Minus has something in a handkerchief to stop Hotachi. The corner of Prince and Green Streets: Minus puts the cloth over Hotachi's mouth, "Garlic? I hate garlic!" He hits Minus down, his eyes tearing. Hotachi gets back to the boy who is hungry and pale as a ghost. He offers to take the boy back to Gen's place (where she always has agaggle of kids around). The boy asks if it is a cult. Hotachi says, "No, we're just a bunch of virtuous pagans..." The boy asks, "A rock group?" At Gen's Hotachi arrives. Neji asks if he found trouble. Simon says, "He found something." The boy explains. His name is Virgil. Simon says, "He's dead." Hotachi says, "Hey, easy with the threat, Simon." Simon in his black shorts that ride up, says, "It's no threat. You know I'm a sensitive. Trust me on thisóóthe kid's dead." Simon also knows the kid has no malice in him. We now see his fangs. Neji and Simon want him to stay. Neji says, "Come on Tachi, he's harmless." Hotachi asks where Gen is again and goes to find her in the kitchen (after Lee tells him where and also tells him not to have a cow). Neji is letting Simon sleep over Gen's again. Hotachi tells her the new kid is a vampire. Gen takes it in stride, "Oh. Then he'll need some place dark. How about that big closet in the den?" She kisses him, telling him they are getting used to his lifestyle. "Now go play with your vampire." Hotachi enters to find Lee (jacket off and short cut shirt still on) with his arm out and the vamp boy drinking. Virgil says he is sorry, "I...I'm sorry...really, I am." Hotachi tells Virgil, "Get in the closet where I don't have to look at you." Simon and Neji help clear a place. Virgil does not have to breath. Hotachi chastises Lee for what he did. Lee tells him he has lost more blood when he has a paper cut. It takes more than one nibble and a suck, Lee says, to make a victim a vampireóóhe asks Hotachi if he reads Ann Rice. Lee fakes a faint and teases Hotachi, who at first, is really scared for Lee. Hotachi, after Lee does a bad vampire imitation, drops Lee, who says, "Hey!" Neji wants to check out what is on cable. Simon asks Virgil if he can eat popcorn. Virgil says, "I don't think so. Got any root beer?" Sullivan Street: The girl's brother goes back to find his dropped cross. Hotachi is there and asks the guy some questions, "Talk fast of die quick, scum." They get the vampires and sell them off. Hotachi lets the guy go but the guy pulls a knife out on him when he turns his back. Hotachi elbows him (and looks like Bruce Lee). The guy falls down on his face, bleeding (dead?). A man comes out of the shadows, a big man, on the rooftop, "Well done, human. If I could not smell your living scent, I would swear you were one of our own. I would have words with you..."
