Samurai: Vampire's Hunt #2
Night Wynd, 1992, b&w.
s Samurai: Vampire's Hunt #2 cover The vampire jumps down and talks to Hotachi (who has his hair tied back into a large crop). Hotachi finds the gang member's cross but it does not affect the vampire, who is a Christian himself. One draws protection from a religious symbol from belief in a power greater than oneself, the vampire tells Hotachi. For Hotachi, his sword is a symbol of a power greater than himself...the code of his ancestors and their honor. The vampire believes in God and puts his trust in Him. He also believes in angels and demons. The vampire talks of the American South where a white supremacist urges the people on while a TV preacher is haunted by a demon nightly. Which is a demon and which is an angel, the vampire asks. A young looking guy with a beret on, listening, appears, to urge on the alliance between Hotachi and the vampire (which he calls pure souls). He vanishes without them seeing. The vampire is called Esteban DeJesus, late of Castille, which fell centuries ago. Hotachi tells Esteban his friendship is earned, not assumed. A demon form is watching the two as they walk. The girl and her brother (still alive?) meet with a Mr. Randolph at a place where they are guarded by Bull. The brother takes a willing Randolph (who, with pleasure follows the "dear boy"). Below are many young boy bodies, more than half naked, in bindings and being held by large men with crosses around their necks. Boys are undead and unliving and shipped in coffins as a commodity with a ball and rope to keep their mouths quiet. Randolph seems have workings in Zurich: war, recession, disease. The blood of the boys has miraculous properties and the boys heal quickly. One boy, apparently put in a coffin by Minus, chose to have this done to him but wanted out before he was shipped in a coffin. Lee asks Virgil what made him decide to do this: Virgil tells him that in a small Kansas town things are pretty borin' and when a dark stranger came to tapping on his window in the middle of the night, he might have been hypnotized but he wanted it too. Virgil was supposed to make contact with other vampires here so he could be taught. Neji asks about if he spent the night in his coffin with the man vampire but he didn't. Lee loved that scene in INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE. Lee figures that everyone is fascinated with vampires. Simon says, "I know I am...they're so ssseexxxyy!" The boys have an Indiana Jones poster and a hanging carousel of dinosaurs. Virgil runs out and barfsóóvampires cannot eat popcorn. Someone seeks out young, naive, unfit lad vampires and harvest them. Many vampires are pleased to see the embarrassing little waifs vanish. A pimp and a hooker try to get Hotachi and Esteban interested. A demon is behind the two. The two fight. Hotachi sees the beret guy at a church and gets some help in fighting the evil three (one is the girl). Esteban holds off the demon and his aides with his cross. Hotachi retreats to Gen's and warns them. Neji says, "I'll get garlic." Lee says, "I'll get stakes." Virgil says, "I'm gonna get sick." Simon says, "Oooohh..." The boys watch as Hotachi gets his sword and takes off his shirt.
