Includes "Fire-Eye #18"
"In the deep wood something lurks, and leaps and learns the lessons of the Green...FIREóEYE."
Many days after leaving the town of Port Passage, Chot and Jethel with Willowsnap
return to the area on Sunholt ContinentóóForevergreen. Chot mentions the place stinks
of magic worse than it ever did. Jethel recalls something Suntop told him: how it
was really Door who sent to him an imageóóthis feels the same. Chot ranks this as
another reason to hate this fool's quest. Jethel has on a jacket and boots. Chot
calls the bugs cursed as the bugs are making so much noise they can't hear anything.
They find humans impaled on large pointed stonesóósome face down and some face up.
A snake goes through skulls...these poor dung muckers have been here a long time.
Chot tells him, "I don't much care right now if you hear your sun maidens doing
the flower song, I want out of here!!" Jethel says there is something more here.
Chot quips, "Hunh! That's what the troll said just before the cave bear ate
him." Jethel gets a sending and holds his head. Three humans comes running,
blaming them for being servants to murderous lords. One is a big fat bald man, one
smaller with straight back dark hair and a smaller one with longer, upward dark hair.
Both smaller ones wear bandannas. One holds two knives. Amid the bodies of the dead
humans, Jethel moves away from the attacker whom Chot tosses out of his way. As he
falls past, Jethel kludds his sword down onto the attacker's back neck, causing much
blood. Chot ssshhkks across the taller one, leaving the bald one who is now flanked
by more. Chot wagers he can outfight all of them, calling the bald one barrel gut.
A spear flies out and hits the bald one in the right side of his chest. Jethel orders,
"Let's get out now!" Chot says, "Butóóbutóóawww, bear turds!"
The bald one says to his men, "You foolsóóhelp me! It hurts!" They see
someone running. Jethel heard singing in the sending. They move across a ground ending
in a cliff and then over a tree branch which extends out to it from a larger area
of trees. Jethel says, "It isóóI remember you..." Sadness was coming from
here. It is Dodia. Jethel tells her he thinks she needs them. She seems more malicious
and tells them she only does what must be done. The stone spikes were Door's warningsóóher
lovemate. Chot says, "We never saw the old crackbrain." Dodia tells them
Door is all around. Willowsnap says, "Hellohello," to a big eye chitter
thing who lives here. It looks like a monkey, squirrel with big ears. Dodia couldn't
leave because she and Door recognized. Willowsnap learns from the monkey thing that
Nastybad Rock Smoosh Highthing got a little pebble thing." Dodia tells them
the child is out of the way where his father can't harm him. She is crying. Chot
thinks she has the stink of death on her...thinking she killed the cub to protect
it. She takes them out to see a pit, telling them she has made it so that Door holds
no sway over her sonóóor anyone ever. Chot thinks, "OOOóEEE! Yep, crazed as
ravvit in a trap, this one..." Jethel touches her shoulder, telling her Door
is gone. He can't hurt anyone any more. He tells her to come with them, even though
there are only two of them, they can help her. For a moment, she seems to brighten
but then she pushes him away, her eyes and face more hateful. She says, "You
all ran away! Youall left me to deal with himóóand the child! You don't know a thing!
You think Door's gone? Dead? Can't you feel him? You don't understandóóI have to
do this my way!! Have you recognized anyone yet little chief of two?" She shares
every dark and shining bit of herself with another. "He's here. I know it."
Chot tells Jethel to let it go as she moves off. Chot has seen it among the GoóBacks.
Door lives in her skull...she will never be rid of him. Dodia cries on her furs in
her hut, "I know itóóleave me please." Chot thinks she will join Door pretty
soon. Jethel hates not being able to help her. Chot thinks they are by getting out
of here. Jethel hears singing again. In a hut on trees across a bridge, the humans
see that the bald one will live. They call him the Great One. Drums signal guards
that their vigil is overóóthat he will awaken soon. A panther tracks something and
goes into a rock area where there is a curtain. It sniffs and moves the curtain.
Behind the curtain is a dark elf, seemingly naked, "Huuuahhh!! Get out!!"
The big cat reeeowws and runs away. "Ancient magic, long slumbering begins to
stir. |
