Includes "Fire-Eye #20"
It is the day after since FireóEye, Chot, and the son of Door and Dodia escaped from
the humans called the True People. The boy stands out on a ledge of rock, letting
the rain hit him, his eyes closed in glee and his mouth in a smile of happiness.
Jethel smiles as he and Chot watch from under the roof of the rock cave, "Our
little cub certainly seems to like the rain!" Chot says, "He's like a crackóbrain
five finger..." "In the deep wood something lurks, and leaps, and learns
the lessons of the Green...FIREóEYE." Chot finishes, "...which is just
saying the same thing twice." Jethel tells him that the boy hasn't ever seen
the rain until today, "Can you imagine how wonderful it must feel to him?"
The boy begins to kick his legs up in what Jethel calls something like Chot's Fish
Dance. Chot tells Jethel to learn how to be a chief and leave the humor to someone
else. Jethel has no shirt on and high tipped boots and either the remains of his
top or a tied up loin cloth. Chot sleeps dreaming he is on a giant hawk, thinking
Kahvi can chase after her little palace. He has what he wantsóóFREEDOM. "Feels
soooooooo good to be free." Jethel wakes him up. Little NoóName (what Jethel
calls him) spotted something. Chot yawns, "What is itóósome fish doing the elf
dance?" The boy says, "Big float!" Jethel tells Chot, "Nothing
so cute. It's a human boat..." Jethel wonders why they are here. Chot says,
"Fiveófingers don't need good reasons for anything...they just take notions
and then jump straight in. Bear fat's got more brains than they do." The boy
wonders if it broke when a small rowboat comes off the big one. Jethel says, "No
cub. The big one carries a little one and that's what the travelers use to get from
water to the shore." Chot says, "Very nice, o wise teacheróóbut do you
think we can learn about hiding now?" GeóO'Ka is in the lead of the rowboat,
feeling the place has a familiar feel to it. There are four others, one a woman with
an umbrella against the sun and rain. The woman tells GeóO that the desires of those
whose fortunes he and his coóhort Ahnn Li wasted are long lastingóóóthey want to
recoup their investments. Ge has on a head rag, a sleeveless vest with neck bare,
belt and long pants. An old man is in the boat with no shirt on and grumbling, next
to a fat one with a wide hat. They stop the boat near a waterfall and get out to
walk. The girl whispers to the others about Ge, "You are to keep close watch
on his every move. If this goes badlyóófor any reasonóókill him." A skinny man
with moustache is next to the girl. The other two carry her out. Ge recalls the place,
"Yesss...this is the place Iremember..." The girl says, "We are all
quite glad to know that." Ge says, "It was many years ago that he went
awayóóleft the Hoan G'Tay Shoe..." The fat one says, "Yeah? Then how'd
you know? You couldn't have been more than a baby?" Ge says, "True but
I do remember." The humans have turned their rowboat over on the beach which
the elves look at. The boy elf has a skimpy ripped thong on, showing his some of
his bare backside. Chot wants to chop up the rowboat for them but Jethel tells him
not to be silly, "Hunh! There's something familiar about this place." Chot
asks, "Not another funny feeling, please?" Something is tugging at Jethel's
memories. Willowsnap says, "Itchy brain highóthing." Further upriver, away
from the waterfall thunder...little Snork, a monkey thing with big ears goes to a
hut on stilts and to an old man with long flowing beard, a bald front of his head
and a hair in back. The man is painting. He says hello to Snork. He goes to eat supper:
it is sticklefish season again, everything in the Forevergreen, he tells Snork, seems
so calm and eternal..."...such a silly notion," he goes on as he and Snork
ride in his rounded boat with the man holding a paddle. |
