Bren and Koni have a joyous reunion. Koni introduces him to Sylvie and Arro. Bren says, "H'lo..." Sylvie bumps into Koni to stop him telling Bren where in the forest they have been living. Koni tells Bren he is living with the brother and sister's family. Bren tells Koni that Ahnn Li would probably cut out the tongues of anyone who talked about Koni after he left. After they make plans to remeet here, Koni tells the other two that he feels bad having to lie to Bren...he never has before. Bren spies on them as they walk off, "Used to be we could tell each other anything." Cam and Kibo are walking for the better part of a day with Cam talking non stop; figuring that Ahnn Li wants Jethel dead but Ahnessah wants him alive for some reason. Chot drops in upsidedown from a tree. Cam remembers him. Chot thinks that a pleasant surprise, supposing not all humans have brains like rotten fishnets. Kibo has fists ready, "Don't you hurt Cap'n Cam!" Cam says, "You're the one who was always eating..." Chot takes it back, pfaughing at them. Chot tells him that the others took their own paths out of the Forevergreen (SHARDS #16). Chot asks Cam if he can trust him, he will tell him things that he wants him to keep secret. Chot asks, "And the little liar?" He refers to Kibo, who cringes away. Cam tells him, "He's yet a bit too young to be the skeptics you and I are, O Forest Spirit. I trust him more than you trust me, I'd wager." "That wouldn't be difficult at all, Story Teller," Chot hates riddles. Chot is to watch over those who would lead. Chot warns Cam not to betray Jethel, "Betray him or the faith he doesn't yet know he has in youóóand you'll never know how you died." He pokes Cam in the chest. Bren returns to the city castle, hears two guards talking about Ahnn Li's terrible mood as he waits for a shipment to arrive. Pony tailed blond servant boy Jooka scares Bren as he bumps into him. Jooka agrees to keep Bren away from Ahnn Li by bringing him to Ahnessah, who welcomes him back. Bren is horrified. Jethel lays against the tree, petting the dogs, lamenting the days he could just live from day to day after Door's plans fell around him. He wishes there was someone he could talk to about things. He hears a sending ("Jethel! Do you remember me?") and knows immediately who it is: Suntop! Jethel says, "Oh, I've missed you!" Suntop appears out of clouds in a void, "And I've missed you too, little chief." There was no chance to say goodbye before the palace came for them, Suntop tells him. Suntop tells him it was time that the calling called him to stop being a follower. Jethel tells him it was always easy to follow Dart, "He always seemed so sure of himself. He was a good leader." Suntop has on tights and a full outfit. Suntop tells Jethel he has to learn howto be good leader, just as Dart had to learn. One of them almost wishes Shenshen were here, giggling. They seem to float around her in the past. One says, "I'm not a child!!" Jethel tells Suntop of the human boy Ahnn Li and of what has been happening here. Ahnn wants to change the whole world, hurt the woods. And he is not the only one, Suntop tells him. Suntop tells him he will have to choose to live in Ahnn Li's world or Jethel's own. Suntop tells him to look within him to find what he needs...it is within him...it has all happened before and will happen again. "My sire, Cutter...my sister Ember...Savah...Dart...Kahvi..all those who would be leaders. They sought. They found. You'll do well, little chief. I've always known that you couldóóeven when I was far away." Jethel asks where he is now and if he will be able to talk to him again. Both have very long hair. Suntop as he talks to Jethel, for a time, holds the other boy's chin in his hand. Jethel says, "When willóó?Huh? Where've I been?" He seems to wake up or is at the tree or both. The dogs are around him asleep.
